Method
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground turkey. Cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the dried oregano, basil, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute to allow the flavors to meld.
- Add the uncooked orzo to the skillet, stirring to coat it with the turkey and seasonings.
- Pour in the diced tomatoes with their juices and the chicken broth. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
- Cover the skillet and simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the orzo is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Remove from heat and stir in the grated Parmesan cheese until melted and well combined.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley and additional Parmesan cheese if desired.
Notes
Chef's Tips:
• For a creamier texture, stir in 1/4 cup of heavy cream along with the Parmesan cheese.
• Avoid overcooking the orzo to prevent it from becoming mushy. Check for doneness after 10 minutes.
• Serve with a side salad and crusty bread for a complete meal.
Food Safety:
• Ensure ground turkey is cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) to kill harmful bacteria.
• Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking and consume within 3-4 days.
