Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water between 105°F and 115°F
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda for boiling
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1/2 cup sugar for coating
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon for coating

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Large pot for boiling
  • Slotted spoon

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy. This step activates the yeast, ensuring your pretzels will rise properly.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, mixing until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add baking soda. This alkaline solution helps give pretzels their distinctive color and flavor.
  4. Divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll each into a rope. Shape into pretzels and boil each for 30 seconds per side. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with melted butter, then toss in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Serve warm and enjoy your delicious creation!

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a crunchier texture, bake an additional 2-3 minutes
• Avoid over-kneading the dough to prevent toughness
• Serve with a side of warm cheese dip for an extra treat
Food Safety:
• Ensure yeast is not expired for proper rising
• Store leftovers in an airtight container to maintain freshness
