Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or Italian sausage for a different flavor
  • 1 jar marinara sauce 24 oz
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 package lasagna noodles 9 oz, uncooked
  • 1 container ricotta cheese 15 oz
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large skillet
  • Medium mixing bowl
  • Aluminum foil

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in the marinara sauce and water, then bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and let it cook for about 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, Italian seasoning, and a pinch of salt and pepper until well combined.
  4. Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Place a layer of uncooked lasagna noodles on top, breaking them to fit if necessary.
  5. Spread 1/3 of the cheese mixture over the noodles, then top with 1/3 of the remaining meat sauce. Repeat the layers two more times, ending with the meat sauce on top.
  6. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  7. Let the lasagna cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving to allow it to set.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a richer flavor, let the assembled lasagna sit in the refrigerator overnight before baking.
• Avoid overcooking the meat to prevent a dry texture in the final dish.
• Serve with a sprinkle of fresh basil for an added touch of freshness.
Food Safety:
• Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) for food safety
• Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of cooking
