Total Time 20 minutes
Servings: 8 servings
Course: Condiment
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter Can use vegetable oil as a substitute
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Gluten-free flour works as a substitute
  • 2 cups chicken or beef broth Use vegetable broth for a vegetarian option
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Optional, for added depth of flavor

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour to create a roux. Cook, stirring constantly, for about 2 minutes until the roux turns a light golden color.
  2. Gradually pour in the broth while continuously whisking to avoid lumps. Add the salt, pepper, and soy sauce if using. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to low and let the gravy simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency. If the gravy becomes too thick, add more broth to thin it out.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a richer flavor, use pan drippings from roasted meat in place of some of the butter
• Avoid boiling the gravy vigorously as it can cause it to separate
• Serve warm over mashed potatoes, roasted meats, or use as a base for soups and stews
Food Safety:
• Refrigerate leftovers promptly within two hours of cooking
• Store in an airtight container and use within 3-4 days
