Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio recommended
  • 1 cup onion finely chopped
  • 1 cup green bell pepper finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns toasted

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Broiler or toaster

Method

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula as it cooks, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. Add the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  5. While the mixture simmers, toast the hamburger buns under a broiler or in a toaster until golden brown.
  6. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted buns and serve immediately.

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a thicker sauce, simmer longer or add a slurry of cornstarch and water.
• Avoid overcooking the beef to prevent it from becoming tough.
• Serve with a side of coleslaw for a refreshing contrast to the rich Sloppy Joes.
Food Safety:
• Ensure ground beef reaches an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) to kill harmful bacteria.
• Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
