Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter active and bubbly
  • 1 cup milk warmed to 110°F
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk or as needed for consistency
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Stand mixer with dough hook attachment
  • Rolling Pin
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Pastry brush
  • Oven thermometer

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sourdough starter, warmed milk, granulated sugar, melted butter, and salt. Stir until well mixed.
  2. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise at room temperature for 4-6 hours, or until doubled in size.
  4. Once risen, roll the dough out on a floured surface into a 12x18 inch rectangle.
  5. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Roll the dough tightly from the long side, then cut into 12 equal pieces.
  7. Place the rolls in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 1-2 hours until puffy.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  10. Once the rolls are done, let them cool slightly before drizzling with the icing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

Chef's Tips:
• For a more caramelized flavor, brush the rolls with melted butter before baking
• Avoid over-kneading the dough to prevent toughness
• Serve with a cup of coffee or tea for the perfect breakfast treat
Food Safety:
• Ensure milk is warmed to 110°F to avoid killing the sourdough starter
• Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days
